Why do Teenagers Smoke?

Teenage Smoking is a Major Social Issue that Need Immediate Attention

Many adolescents begin to smoke cigarettes at the tender age of nine or ten. By the time they reach their teen years they are avid if not chain smokers. The question remains as to why these teenagers smoke so early in life. According to Ruth E. Stuettgen, the statistics are alarming. In Australia alone, the annual spend on Cigarettes by school children amounts to AU$ 30 million.

Take it or Leave it
Young children do not realize the harmful effects of smoking cigarettes. Even if they are aware of it, they see others doing it. If it was so harmful why do they do it? Most teenagers believe that they are invincible. They believe that nothing bad will happen to them. They also believe that they will be able to stop whenever they wish to do so.

Peer Pressure
Children grow up seeing their parents and siblings with cigarettes in their hands. They also do it in order to impress their friends. It is also considered very grown up to smoke cigarettes. As all teenagers wish to be treated as grownups they believe that smoking cigarettes will enable others to take them seriously.

Rebelling
Teenagers also begin smoking in order to rebel against parents and other adults. Some do it to get attention or to look “cool”, or others may do it because they lack self esteem.

Whatever the reasons, teenage smoking is a common social bane in modern day society. However, for the sake of our future generations, this should be stopped. With proper education and communication, parents and peers alike will be able to inform and educate their children on the dangers of smoking and why it is necessary that they should quit cigarettes. On the other hand, stringent legislature on sale of cigarettes to minors can also be helpful. For those who have a fully ingrained smoking habit at young teenage years, treatments such as hypnosis therapy can be ideal as they have a life time ahead to enjoy good health, once they are cured of their smoking. Quit Cigarettes in 60 Minutes™ program being offered by focus on balance, Scorsby, Victoria has cured many young people from their smoking habits and offer a life time guarantee for the success of the treatment.
